Belongings Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion

I sew and craft for myself and for others.  I actually find clothing lying around.  I pick it up and wash it.  Sometimes if it is in good condition and I don't want it, I give it to a thrift store.  If it is in not so good shape, I'll fix it and wear it or give it to someone else.  Some times, I will scavenge parts of the article of clothing (buttons, zippers, elastic) to use in my own products.  I try to use all that I can and come up with creative uses for everything.

    At Home Hold the Mail
Reducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin, too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?

I always start in the same places - my kitchen and my bedroom.  These areas are actually in good shape and so I don’t find much clutter there.  I need to start in the basement where there is a lot of clutter to clear out.

Usually, always leftovers first and we prioritize veggies and/or fruits that have a shorter shelf life.

My family of 4 avoids paper plates entirely, but it does get tough if we're having a gathering to celebrate a birthday or something. We just don't have that many plates! In this case, I will try to purchase compostable plates in the future.

This is what I did for some pre-covid birthday parties-- I went to Goodwill and bought plates and napkins from their party section. In some ways I feel this is cheating...I guess I am taking advantage of others' overpurchasing. My kids were fine with a mishmash of Batman, space theme, Snoopy, Happy Birthday, etc.
