Audible books from Hennepin County library thru the Libby app on my phone is an ideal way to get books read while working in my yard

It can be difficult to get the rest of the members of my household to get on board, but showing them some of these reminders has increased their buy in

    Food Ditch the Baggie
When is it hardest not to use a plastic bag? What can motivate you to stick to your goal in those cases?

I have only a small stash of disposable plastic bags and try to think twice before using them. Hoping to make my current bags last a long time by reusing them and washing

I hope that everyone has learned a few new recycling pointers over the past week. Please share with the team a recycling/reuse idea that you haven't seen highlighted yet. I recently purchased a few Norwex cleaning products (dusting mit, dusting wand and glass cleaner) so that I don't have to buy plastic bottles of cleaning product in the future. I put them to the test earlier this week and all did really well. Just a bit of water on the mit to catch dust but used the other 2 products dry. They are pricey but I estimate they will save $$ with time as I don't purchase cleaning dusting or glass cleaner.

No more store receipts in the recycling. I also remove plastic tops from glass bottles before I put them in the recycle bin.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Week 1 Focus: Recycling and Composting No More Wish-cycling
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

After saving store receipts for years to recycle, I discovered that the thermal paper that they are printed on is not recyclable. Target has a drop off for plastic bags. Ziplock bags can be reused and then recycled if you cut off the ziplock part of the bag.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Zero-Waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

Roasting vegetables that are just past their prime and starting to fade makes them much more edible. I roasted sweet potatoes, broccoli, onions and red pepper tonight and used them to make vegetarian enchiladas. Left overs are great for lunch.

I have found the easiest way to avoid using paper plates or napkins is to not have them available. We put a cloth napkin by each persons chair and use it a few times until it become too dirty to continue to use.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Week 1 Focus: Recycling and Composting Recycle Plastic Bags
Has separating your plastic bags for recycling helped you identify how you might reduce how many you have? What are you doing differently now?

Reusing the bags as they are all in one place and easier to access
